Minecraft Changes Its Version Numbering System After Years
Minecraft is switching to a new year-based version numbering system. The goal is to make versions for Java and Bedrock clearer and easier to track.

Small but Important Changes in Version Numbers
Minecraft has incrementally increased its versions from 1.0 for many years. With the “Tricky Trials” update released in 2024, it reached version 1.21, and that year a new game drops strategy was announced to deliver content more frequently.
This change also required a reorganization of version numbers. For example, The Garden Awakens was released in December 2024 as 1.21.50 on Bedrock and 1.21.4 on Java. Subsequent updates Spring to Life and Chase the Skies made it appropriate to update the numbering system for the upcoming Mounts of Mayhem release.
New Year-Based Version Numbering System
Starting in 2026, Minecraft versions will be numbered by year. For example, 2026 versions will start with “26.”
Since Bedrock and Java have different release frequencies, the numbers following “26” will vary by platform. These differences arise from platform limitations and Bedrock's more frequent updates. However, using the same prefix will make it easier for players and content creators to identify versions.
Example Version Numbers in the New System
- Minecraft Bedrock: 26.50, 26.51
- Minecraft Java: 26.5, 26.5.1
Benefits for Players and Content Creators
While this change may have little impact on players, it simplifies version tracking for modders and content creators. It's now much easier to tell which version is a game drop and which only contains patches or bug fixes.
The community will also regain a system where they can discuss new game drops before official names are announced. Previously, version numbers served this purpose, and the new system restores this convenience.
When Will the New System Be Applied?
The year-based version numbering system will be used for all Minecraft versions starting in 2026. Previews of the system will be available starting this week.
This way, confusion will be reduced when joining our Minecraft Bedrock server. IP: play.Raey.net
